Skills Day 2026: 1000 Students Showcase Talent at UDST, Qatar (2026)

The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) recently hosted an extraordinary Skills Day, an event that showcased the institution's commitment to experiential learning and the development of practical, real-world skills. With 1,000 students participating in 48 diverse challenges, it was a testament to the university's innovative approach to education.

One of the key aspects that stood out to me was the emphasis on teamwork and collaboration. Most competitions were designed as team-based endeavors, mirroring the collaborative nature of professional settings. Dr. Salem Al-Naemi, the university president, rightly pointed out that these experiences are crucial in preparing graduates for a rapidly changing global economy.

What makes this particularly fascinating is the integration of interprofessional education. Students from various programs, such as engineering, computing, and health sciences, came together to tackle real-life case scenarios. This approach not only enhances teamwork and communication skills but also provides a holistic understanding of how different disciplines intersect in practical situations.

Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, Athar Elhakim, highlighted the importance of these experiences in preparing students for healthcare settings. By applying their knowledge gained through clinical placements and simulations, students are better equipped to make informed decisions and collaborate effectively.

One student, Sidra Bakhtawar, shared her experience of being paired with a pharmacy technician student to address a clinical scenario involving a patient with hypertension. This highlights the practical application of knowledge and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in healthcare.

Another student, Abrar Alemam, emphasized the realism of the simulations, noting that they closely reflect real-life situations encountered in hospital settings. The time required to manage these scenarios varies, depending on the complexity and urgency of the case, further underscoring the importance of critical thinking and decision-making skills.

The event was sponsored by Qatar Petrochemical Company, Huawei, and Cisco, among others, reflecting a shared vision to nurture future-ready talent. Lyn Xiong, CEO of Huawei Qatar, emphasized the company's commitment to practical, industry-aligned learning through initiatives like the Huawei ICT Academy and the ICT Competition.

Skills Day 2026 concluded with an awards ceremony, celebrating the innovation and exceptional performance of students across various competitions. It was a day that not only showcased the talents of the students but also highlighted the university's dedication to preparing its graduates for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
